I have been told by some fellow salt water enthusiasts that its a good idea to do a fresh water dip to any new fish you get before introducing them to your tank. I'm slightly puzzled by this. Why would i go through the trouble of a 2 -3 hour acclimation if I'm going to be exposing them to a environment with 0 salinity. Your thoughts and opinions will be greatly appreciated.

It's not insane. It has to do with the idea that any parasites on the fish will die off.

It's a misconception that it kills ich (it'll kill any ich in the drops of water with the fish, but not any ich already burrowed into its body, and it'll kill most other parasites), but fish can take a FW dip, then go right back to saltwater, and be fine.

I don't drip acclimate or anything like that for fish. Temp and dump in the tank.

I drip acclimate......to each there own.....I know a FW Dip won't hurt...but why...i never mail order fish and make sure they are healty and eating before I buy from my LFS.
Stress causes ick and it usaully is a good thing to find out why...water perameters etc...
I just had a small yellow tail tang get it and if your water parameters are good it will dissapear....mine lost it then 2 weeks later it came back because my Gold Bar Clown was harrassing it....now it has been a little more than 2 months and she is fine and growing.....
