We've all been reading/hearing of a ban in this hobby for some time now. I was at a LFS today, one I really like, very friendly knowledgeable people. We got to talking about how there very well may be a ban on the corals mentioned in the title, as well as clownfish. ORA has been sending my LFS emails about it. Have any of you heard anymore about this and other bans for this hobby?

With that said, I'd like to say. Like most of you I love wild coral reefs. I am for preserving wild reefs, but still see it possible to keep the hobby going with all the frag swaps and getting corals from friends. It's there really a need to take corals out of the ocean anymore? No?

The aquarium hobby is the best thing thats happened for alot of reefs out there. In most parts of the world there is no apparent value in preserving them except for tourism and the aquarium trade.

    Wish people knew more.

There's always some organization or group of people assuming we take all the corals off the reef and cause their decline, when really its the opposite.

If any corals were to be banned, I'm not surprised about euphillya. LFS was telling me that they have some of the lowest survival rates of corals from being harvested to getting into displays. Not to mention the amount of coral mass you lose when fragging. 8" wall hammer only produces about 2 2" viable frags. On top of that, LPS are some of the slowest growing corals.

Banning clownfish? Never heard of that, there are MANY other fish that would do better being banned from collection.

Yeah, I don't know either. I'm not saying its not true, but it doesn't sound right. I've only got my own experience and no one else to speak of. But When I had my tank 5 years ago, when I was more active, I took a single head of frog spawn and turned it into 8 within about a year. I fragged each head and gave them away successfully.

Just from my experience, seems like they culture fairly well in home aquaria.

I think something is getting lost in translation here. Probably something along the lines of banning imports or harvesting.

Well will all my friends on here and in my area I am not worried we could keep this hobby alive with frags.

They have been trying to ban those ones mentioned for years now, One day I think it will get done but that's years and years down the road imo.
