Set up a light in my fuge to run opposite the lights in my DT. However, when I turned the light on I noticed it lit up the entire under-cabinet, spilling light into the return section of the sump. Will this pose a future problem? Is there another solution?

I've got no problems, just coraline on every part of the sump.

Coralline I can deal with! I hard plumbed the overflow and return pipe so no issues there, I think. Just have a small section of clear reinforced flex hose to go from pump to the hard plumbing of the return line that I can clean out if algae appears. Mostly cocerned with skimmer section.

I have my clip-on sump light so its only a couple of inches above the refugium. No light is spilled, so both the skimmer and return are algae free. If there is no opportunity to do this, then the only downside is algae buildup, which could affect pump performance over time if they are not cleaned.

What kind of light do you have? those little reflectors work wonders. +1 to the algae growing in your skimmer and reactors

you can always take some black 1/8" acrylic and make a "shade of sorts to direct the light only into the fuge. Could even take some cheap home depot plexi and spray it black as well.

Shouldn't have any problems though. I've seen many people that have light spilling over into the rest of the sump with no ill effects.

I actually had to remove the reflector as there was not enough room under my stand. I am using a 13W (IIRC) 5000k CFL. Total investment of $15 I think ;D

So, ultimately, I take that it should pose no problems.. I will just pay attention and remove any unwanted algae in the return section, skimmer and/or return pump
