fuge maintenance

Is it ever necessary to clean the fuge? Mine is maturing quite nicely. Chaeto is growing, pods are multiplying, and the funk is starting to build up on the chaeto, sand and lr. Do you guys ever clean your fuge? The ones I see at the lfs are pretty "funky" and dont look like they have ever been touched. Thanks in advance for your help.

 

The only maintenance I do is to remove some of the macro algae if it is filling the fuge. Other than that I do not disturb the system.

I just pull out some algae every once in a while. You should never stir up the fuge, let it sit and do it's work.

 

I wondered this for a long time. I recently cleaned mine just a bit a couple weeks ago and I think it helped. My fuge was nasty. Cyano was growing in there and it was getting in my DT. I took the chaeto out and cleaned it in fresh saltwater, then just scooped any algae off the sides and overflow pipe that had collected. That is all I did. It still has some funk, just alot less and the chaeto is clean again and suckin up some nutrients!
