I'm having a hard time deciding on how my 20T sump will be laid out for the new tank and could use a little input. I can either go with a small fuge / DSB, or I can completely load up my sump with live rock. Downsizing from the 125 has left me with a TON of extra live rock, so I figure why not use it?

The skimmer I'm looking at is way over rated for the estimated 30-35 gallons of water I'll be keeping so my thought process is there wont be enough nutrients in the water for the small fuge to be effective . . . or will there? the biggest I can make the fuge will be around 7"x12", and with a 4" sand bed Thats leaves only like 3 gallons for a refugium. Without the fuge I gain more room in the sump without the needed baffles and also gain a butt load of cured live rock.

Which do you think would be better?

I would go with the fuge. Unless you are trying to get a display look with minimal live rock in it, you will have plenty of rock in the DT. It's better to add bio-diversity as well as nitrite and phosphate eliminating macro to your system than more rock. It will also provide habitat for pods and if you run a reverse light schedule can help keep ph more stable.

    I am torn here.

On one hand a fuge is an awesome thing.
However a large cryptic zone would be awesome as well.

How about a DSB with a bunch of LR piled on top of it. Kind of an inbetween thing.

do lots of rubble rock.. Its massive surface area and good filtration.. if you do frequent water changes and have a good skimmer you dont need a fuge..
