We are currently setting up a fuge/sump and I was reading some previous threads about sand in a fuge. Is is a bad thing to use new live sand in a fuge or is it necessary to use sand/LR from the main tank initially?

I like to use about 2 inches of cheap clay cat litter and then a cap of about the same of Fine sugar type sand like Carib-Sea in fact I'm putting a fuge together now and thats how I'm setting it up as I have all over the last 15 plus yrs. Only difference this time is I'm setting it up as a plenum with a way to drain/drip of the bio sludge when needed

So the Carib-Sea is dry sand? Do you rinse the cat litter first?

You can use what ever you chose as a substrate in your fuge/sump... I am partial to Aragonite with Kent's biosediment and Fiji Mud "Refugium Booster" by Walt Smith industries!!!

Thanks, just wanted to make sure I wouldn't interfere with any biological or chemical factors by introducing new LS or LR. Thank you for your responses.
    I really appreciate it!!
