Fuge

May sound like a daft question but what goes into a fuge, I think i have room in the filter compartment in the back of my tank. I have done an internet search and it did not reveal very much.

a fuge or refugium is a section of the sump that as its name implies is a refugium for life forms that can help with your water quality parameters

typically a sump will have sand normally deep sand to assist with nitrate removal via the bacteria that lives in oxygen depleted zones , with sand sifting inverts, some Macro algae
which also helps with Nitrate control

water needs to flow through fuge relatively slowly to give everything time to do its respective job - typically a fuge has around 5% - 7% of the DT volume going through it per hour

Thanks steve, i will have to rethink my idea. The water flow through the filter compartment is qiute high, about 1300lph. Are these usually through a sump filter.

 

normally yes, Fuges are normally in sumps, I have seen some hang on back refugiums though , check the product review or 3 reef radar section on this site as Im sure at least one has been reviewed on there

also check our Damsels r cool thread as I believe he converted a hang on back filter into a fuge? check it out , I might have memory problem?
