Fully Cryptic Reef Aquariums

Has anyone heard of this or had any experience with a cryptic reef aquarium set up? Just started doing some reading on it after I ran into it while looking up info on Tyree. It sounds interesting so far.

Whats so cryptic about the animals in the tanks, there just sponges and stuff right?

Pictures and Info on cryptic tanks, all I know is they take a LONG time to establish but are cheap and almost maintenance free

 

It seems to be the hitch hikers and there allowed to flourish. I like the idea but I wouldn't devote a 40g.

I actually had that same type of big white sponge in my last tank it lived under a powerhead, died when I moved the powerhead.

 

Very interesting...well at least I know what's been growing in my tank now..just got an id from pic#3...

 

ive been doing some readings on the subject. it seems not to be fully tested yet. but all agree on adding diversity would not harm but its not to replace the known refugium. so the regular refugium with macro does export some of the nitrates it would be nice if the cryptic set up exports some more. i would definitely try it when i have more space.
it would be nice to know what creatures could be added. i read that feather dusters, sponges, nudibranch could be added but i wonder if all kinds of these creatures fit in this kind of setup
