    i just found out today that algae when the lights are off uses oxygen and produces carbon dioxide unlike when the lights are on and it uses CO2 to make O2. at night the added CO2 will lower your ph so if you have alot of algae in your tank watch your ph.

    This is also why an open top design helps too. It allows for the CO2 to be expelled easier at night.

    So does that mean that if your fuge is 24hrs lit that there will be adverse effects?

    IDK about adverse effects, however 24 hr lighting isn't natural. Plants and algae need at least 6 hrs of dark for their maintenance functions.
