So I want to at some point down the road add a sump to my Biocube 29. I was wondering if anyone on here has done that before and how they did it. I was looking at getting either a 10 or 20 gal tank and an overflow box, would rather not do any drilling. As far a looking at pump and overflow box ratings, what's a good gph for each? I know the pump gph will be affected by how far it has to pump the water up so what would be a good gph for it to be when it's pumping into the tank?

I would go with an Eshopps PF-300 overflow which is rated for 300gph. Get a pump that will push about 500gph and be sure to install a ball valve in the return line.

Funny you should mention that. That is the exact overflow I was looking at. Any recommendations on a specific pump too?

I like Rio pumps. Very quiet and don't put out much heat. Eshopps is one of 3reef's sponsors and I believe they posted something about a discount the other day. You should check in there forum.

Ok, I searched Eshopps posts and couldn't find anything about a discount but that's cool, they are pretty cheap to begin with. I looked at the Rio pumps and they are reasonably priced as well. I found the 1700 which has a rating of 642 gph and 418 gph at a head of 3'. Do you think that this pump coupled with the 300 overflow box would be a good combo?

That sounds like it should be perfect!

Eshopps are awesome too, Comparable to none.

Thanks for the help. I'll probably be to this thread later when I decide to actually build this.

If you find the overflow a bit noisy try adding a Stockman Aqua-Silencer to it. I put one on mine and it is ultra quite.
