I'm with pgreef. I'm pretty sure he posted on my thread way back when.

No one has been able to tell me exactly what it is. I noticed it first when I rearranged my rock. Some rocks got flipped over in the re-scape and I noticed in darker spots of the tank this grey feathery algae. Even some of the rocks that were flipped, I stacked higher to the light to see if the light would stop the growth or kill it and it hasn't. It stays short and thick. I took a toothbrush to a few rocks because its super ugly algae. I'd rather have GHA. it could be a form of hair algae, but its not green. It could also be a form of byropsis, but it doesn't look like any pics online. I'll try to get some macro shots this week.

Ok. I took some macro shots of it in my tank today. I removed a rock full of xenia so I could nuke it. So these pictures are of an area that was shaded by the rock.

Like I said earlier it really only grows in the dark shadows and under rocks.

Karma to anybody that comes up with the ID of this stuff.

I thought it was detritus at first too. But this stuff actually has a branching structure. The second picture shows this best. I'm going to try to pull some out with tweezers today to see how well it holds together.

Mine is very similar to pgreefs. Ill try to post a macro of mine as well. I have noticed that detritus does build up on my gray algae. I think it grows best in low flow areas where detritus build up. I have some growing in high flow areas too but its because I've flipped rocks.
