FX5 went down no filtration HOW LONG???

my fx5 impeller just broke and i ordered a new one but it will prob take like three days for it to get here. i have 4 kar. pushing the water inside the tank and my protein skimmer is running. how long can i go with no filtration before i start losing fish. thanks

 

Hi, I had to google FX5, had no idea what that was. If you have live rock/sand you needn't worry, that is your main filter (biological) the canister (mechanical) has little real purifying impact except for filtering out larger detritus and for running carbon or other media. As long as you have good flow and skimmer you can go indefinitely. Some don't even use HOB or canisters if they have an adequate bio filtering capacity.

 

I agree with unclejed, don't worry about it.

 

3 days is nothing. Your fish will be just fine.

I have more then one FX5. I went on-line and bought a few extra parts (impeller, gasket etc) just to keep around. I did not go too crazy, but I was worried about something going wrong (generally on a friday night.. so you can't get anything ordered till monday).

My only real complaint is the top screws/bolts. those are really $$, I bought 3 spairs, not paying attention to how much they cost.
