Very easy when edges heated with a high-output heat gun...

Sides just pull apart when silicone adhesive gets warmed up a bit.

May be whole different story if tank held together with some other type of adhesive...:-/

So here is what remains of my "very" old 55 gal....(not counting bottom what may be "tempered glass"...)....but sides very thick 1/2 inch glass. They don't make tanks like this any more. Have had for 30 years and taken it all over the world...it has made it through allot of serious abuse.

Now gets chance to become a new glass sump.

Good post, Omard! I love DIY, as you probably know from my 90G build thread.

I have a glass/mirror place that drills holes for me for $10. I've used them a couple of times. They also sold me the glass for the baffles for my sump/'fuge. I think it was 8 pieces of 1/8" glass cut to size for $15. Can't really beat that.

Too bad there's no real resale on glass. If you were to buy those 4 pieces of 1/2" glass you'd spend a bundle!

There's a guy up here that has drilled a lot of tanks that I would trust.
    What's his name????
Oh, yeah that's it, it's Roger.

Can't wait to see what you've got in mind, OmarD.
    Karma on the upgrade.;)

Careful using a heat gun on tempered glass. My wifes little sister was using a heat gun on her moms glass table for some sort of artsy scrap booking thing, table got too hot and cracked in half. Just a warning from previous experiences.

When tempered glass breaks, won't it break into a buttload of small fragments? I would think so, once the tension on the surface is compromised. I wouldn't be surprised if windhsields weren't regularly submitted to heat great than that of a heat gun.

Of course, I am far from being an expert.

Good luck with the sump, you "gnarly old codfish"! :D
