Just ordered 2 G-mann actinics and 2 aquablues (54 W) This is what the website says....

A special 60:40 combination of 6000K and 22000K (approx) phosphor blend. It is specifically designed for reef aquariums mimicking sea water to a depth of one to twenty meters. It can be used for growing SPS corals up to 80cm in the aquarium. The tubes can be combined with Aqua Flora for freshwater, tropical fish and planted aquaria.

    HIGHLIGHTS aquablue+

    light colour: blue/white 15.000 K
    power output: 24, 39, 54, 80 watt
    use : salt-water & fresh water aquariums
    technology: 5-bands-phosphor
    actinic + light colour: deep

My question is do they mean 80 CM from the lamps? 80 CM deep in the water?

Its about 30 inches Just so you dont have to google it like me...

my guess would be from the bulbs because what if the light was 2' above the water, a lot of light would be wasted

Actually in my cataloge it states 800cm!!?! I knew it was a misprint and they meant 80cm. Essentially they are saying it will penetrate about 80cm down from the lamp.

Yea, thats what it says on the box for the lamp too. So i mounted them on the cieling over the tank. Its about 4 ft up there. I think SPS will be fine!

It also said it was a 15k bulb on the box, and then 11k bulb in the catalog. But im told and believe from the looks its a 12k bulb.

Its the aquablue +....I think they need to get their act together

Funny thing is if you were to run the Aquablues as a stand alone they look yellowish, at least they do to me...

    I noticed that too...

I would say that next time im going to try ATI's, but i was told they are the exact same lamp, made in the same factory.

Maybe aqua science... i heard they grow sps pretty well.

What is the dif between the actinic + and the true actinics? Par?

Giesemann and ATI used to be the same lamp, I mean exact same. ATI then found another manufactor...Which I believe is Sylvania now...

As far as spectrum is concerned they are nearly identical.

True actinic is more violet, and is not as "powerful" in terms of brightness and PAR output. Blue+ or Actinic+ lamps are blue, bright and kick out the PAR.

    So Dr,

Ive actually been meaning to ask you a question as the resident t5 expert.

I know i have borderline lighting for SPS.

    Right now i run the 4 x 54 and 2x 28 actinics...I have two more 28 W t5s that are empty right now.

    The 4 x 54's are getting icecap SLR's tomorrow.

You know the bulbs (they arent overdriving and cant)

...What do you think about this over a 75?

Is there any SPS that you KNOW would not do well... i know that there are some that need alot alot of light. The monti and cap i have seem to be doing great. Hawkins to be determined still. An acro i have has not done well... but is starting to come around again ....

    Thanks,

Montipora capricornis, digitata, and spongodes are all easy SPS... Seriatoporas (birdnests) do well and are easy to keep. Acropora millepora(millies) do well in what you have as well.. As for something different, such as stags go with green slimers(acropora yongei) will all be good starters.
