I have been researching this product for a few weeks now and have read good reveiws and bad. So I am going to start this thread to try to draw a conclusion to all the debate and maybe help the next reefer make the same decision I had to make. So here it is, I ordered 3lbs of GARF grunge. I will be adding 1lbs to my refugium and the other 2lbs to my mian tank witch is 29 gal. and only about 5 weeks old. I will update this thead form the day I get it in the mail and let everyone know everything I exsperiance with it. In the mean time I would like anyone who has used it to give there opinion of what they thought...

The batch I purchased 3 years ago was very rich in life and was a big help in getting the system started... however the batch I purchased in January was more gravel, less "mud", and not much in the way of visible life... I still put it in the refugium... but, I'm less inclined to purchase again or recommend...

I have bought Grunge 2x, I know it really helped with the coraline. I also got a cleaning crew the first time which was amazing, overall I say yes to Garf Grunge. Just be careful if you have critters that need the sandy substrate that you don't over do it with the GG, because it is a bit chunky - we put ours more behind the rocks in the back of the tank.

Be sure to talk to Leroy and let him know what you need and what you are trying to do with your system and he will steer you in the right direction. Also, if you have a problem let em know and they will take care of it.

Let us know how it goes...

I've heard a few good reviews but alot of really bad reviews. Its kinda hit or miss on the grunge, there are alot of people who have packets of gravel and hydrogen sulfide, i know of people who got flatworms, nutis, and red bugs in theirs, and customer service sounds hit or miss as well. They were game changers in the industry though a few years back and I still want to see their facility if ever in boise.

On the hit or miss.... I'll add a MISS.

I ordered grunge.... grunge plus.... it was horrible!!! Broken bags... leaking through the boxes.

After 20 phone calls... I finally got them to replace it. Even the replacement was horrible. It was like cement gravel with absolutely no signs of coraline or life of any kind. I refused to put it in my tank.

Absolutely the biggest waste of money I have ever made. I used it as landfill for a hole in my backyard.

I would NOT recommend GARF to an enemy much less a friend.

    :(

PS -- and Yes, I have strong opinion on that one.

As you realize your grass is literally melting with the hole being the epicenter of the dieing grass.

I know someone who ordered it a long time ago and it was filled with life.

    Don't do it!

I ordered GARF GRUNGE about a month ago. It came and had leaked all over the box and the instructions for it. It smelled so bad that I could not even keep it in the house. I called Leroy and of course he didn't answer my call or email until the next day. During that time I put the ten pounds of grunge in a big container and dumped ten gallons of my tank water on it along with a filter. I took reading the next day and the ammonia levels were of the carts high. He emailed me the next day saying it should smell that way. I emailed him back telling about the ammonia levels and he said it must of got to hot and that he would send me a new batch. That was over three weeks ago now and after sending many emails and calling several times I have now gave up. Don't waist your money or give you money to a company like this!

I wasn't happy with my grunge order either. The communication is horrible and the product wasn't worth it in my opinion. Just a question for those of you who have bought it - was yours loaded with cat hair? When I added it to the tank there was cat hair all mixed in with the grunge
