I'm going to mix some food for my fish. I got some frozen mysis shrimp and some other seaweed based product (I forget what it's called, I'm at work and it's in my freezer).

Anyway, I want to add garlic juice. I have been unable to find that but I have found "garlic oil".

This is "organic" and is made from garlic bulb and garlic oil. (Which seems like an odd ingredient list to me - isn't it all derived from bulb?).

Additionally, the bottle I have found at store says "topical, for external use only".

Which I don't understand why that would be, but I further don't know if it's good for my fish food or not.

I bought it, but kept the receipt. I can always return it.

Is this safe and (more importantly) beneficial? Or is this something else entirely from what I want?

I would not use that. Its not made for fish and could be toxic.

Are you using some kind of medication in your mix? If not there is no reason to add garlic. The only reason I use it is when I am medicating a fish. The garlic just disguises the medicine. It is not really benificial to your fish.

i was told to bleed off oil if using real garlic. So I would think garlic oil is not safe.

I think you are mistaken about that. Garlic boosts the immune system of the fish.

I have read and heard several times that it boosts immune system. But I don't know myself.

I just added a Royal Gramma a couple of weeks ago and hope to add a frag soon. For these reasons, I am interested in boosting their immune system.

I feel like I haven't gotten a solid answer on this... please keep comments coming and thanks for your comments so far!

I have my doubts. I am not mistaken because there has been no formal research that I know of so I am going to stick to my guns on this one. I don't like the idea of regularly feeding fish something that they are not naturally exposed to. It is possible that it may boost the immune system but fish have different body chemistry than humans so you can't necessarily apply what you know about the benifits of garlic in the human body to fish. Fish may not be able to digest the benificial compounds as far as we know.

I've been using garlic extract at each feeding for several months now and haven't had any ill side effects. I couldn't say whether it is doing anything beneficial or not though. BUt like others have said, it is supposed to help with the immune system. I've also noticed some dry and frozen fish food labels sporting the "now with garlic for immune system health" on the label.
