I was wondering if putting a wood canopy on my tank like you see on many screws up the gas exchange process...thx!

Not as long as it is vented. I have a fully enclosed canopy on my 100G reef system and have two 4" computer fans, one in each end blowing in to cool the MH lights and equal sized holes in the roof of the canopy for hot air to escape and have no problems with oxygenation or heat either one.
