its the acrylic/glass sheets that divide the tank. you should first plan it out by drawing it, or whatever helps you. then buy the materials, you would need acrylic/glass, aquarium safe silicone, the tank, an overflow box, a pump, and the plumbing for them.

Your making this sound to easy adam! Ha, ok. So could you define thigs like overflow? I know what it sortof does, but not exactly.

We CAN fit a 20 gallon..but it will barely fit with only 3" at the top. Bummer! Is there a 15 long that would fit?

An overflow is a box that uses a siphon to pull water over the side of the tank and into the sump. Here are a few VERY important things to do when building a sumo to prevent a disaster:

    1. NEVER go cheap on an over flow. Look for one that says "self priming" or "restarting". If the power went out, a cheap overflow wouldnt restart when the lights come back on. Ab you dont want it to stop siphoning the water down or else your return will send water up to the tank and flood it.

    2. Use a check valve in the return line. If the power were to go out, you dont want water going down the return line flooding the sump.

yep, what mattias said. mine is a eshopps 300 gph overflow, once you prime it, it self primes any time something goes wrong. if the power goes out, it still has its syphon but its not sucking anything up. that way theres no flood. whenever the power comes back on, it just starts up again. i would put a ball valve on both the return and overflow, that way you can fix whatever goes wrong. just dont use the ball valve on the overflow to decrease flow, that can cause it to stop sucking.

google aquarium sizes to get a list of all the sizes, weights, and more of glass tanks. thats how i found out a 20 long would work. the hard part is actually finding a place to buy the tank. i had to special order a 20 extra high and thats why i wanted to butcher the tank stand instead.
