i would ask your lfs if you can keep your livestock in there tank for a day or two until you know everything is alright. if you can, i would drill the 40b and add a bulkhead. that way making a sump would be very easy. mr x will help a ton if he messages back.

great! itlll be worth it, but its going to be a little tough. then again, you have 2 people working on the tank. the only thing i would worry about not going to the lfs is the ammonia spike that you could get from the dieoff of the sand and rock.

    Yeah!!! We will work quickly!
We will put the rocks in water so there will be minimal dieoff. Also, should we wash all the sand?

What do you mean move it as little as possible? We have about a 2-3" sandbed, but ill need more sand as the 40 has a much bigger footprint. Also, i want a full, 3" sandbed for my pistol shrimp. Should i put in all the old sand, then the new pfs on top?

Congrats on the plans to upgrade already. :)

The sandbed has the majority of your organic bacteria (which is what keeps the tank stable). Washing it will basically rid of all this good bacteria we want. But if you stirred up the sandbed and used all of it in the new tank, you will have another full cycle due to the nitrogen imbalance. You will want to transfer some of it over to the new tank, thus 'seeding' the new sand. Bring just a few cups of sand over to the 40g. The rest should be new sand.
