I take about a gallon or two out of my tank and add the salt to that so I don't have wait for the water to heat up to get an accurate reading. Also by doing this, i don't have to pull water out to have enough room to put the new water in. I have maybe a gallon of evap a week right now, so not very much at all.

So what is the sg of the new water you create?

Honestly I have never checked. Probably not a good idea I guess. I just know that adding 1/2 cup of salt to my system will raise my sg 0.001. If my sg is 1.023, then adding 1/2 cup of salt will raise it to 1.024 in my tank with my total water volume. It is different for evey system of course. It is a trl and error kind of thing. You just have to find what works for you and your tank, but just raise it slowly.

I have a 40 gallon tank, but displacement from the live rock and sand I would say that I have around 35 gallons of water roughly. Could be less I guess. I have 40 - 45 pounds of live rock and around 40 pounds of sand.
