Alright, this whole thing started yesterday me and the misses decided it was about time to get another clown fish. so the LFS had some pics up of black and white, orange, tomato clowns all that good stuff. then she asks "can we gat the black one" my response is no because the black and orange wont get alone. then my wife throwes me a curve ball saying but are clown is not black of orange but a mixture of the two.

she is technically right, I got him from Doylef4i back in 5-11 and they were described as a mixture of Black O. and Orange Perc. clowns. it is a mis-bar but the color has me just totaly confused. Its not black or orange just a mixture. he is now a year and four months old and is mostly orange but will he be black or orange?

I am trying to get him a mate that is definatly smaller so there wont be alot of issues with figting but I cant decide what would be the best color match. so any help from the clow breeder out there would be greatly appreciated and I can get a pic but it will be tonight before I can get a current one up.

Color doesn't really matter -species is what's important (and even this isn't a rock-solid rule. iBluewater occasionally has cross-species pairs, IIRC). Until recently, I had a black false perc./orange true perc. pair that got along just fine from day one.

As far as the final color of your current clown, I can't really say. Being that old, I can't imagine his color changing that much down the road. He may even stay a sort of "mocha" color.

There is, but it involves getting pretty intimate with your fish (IIRC, the only reliable method is to count the dorsal spines, but there could be others).

Regardless, I've never seen an issue with mixing false and true percs (mine were conspecific, in fact).

Not at all. My black was actually misbar (slightly). You can sorta see it in this shot (the other side was actually less developed - the white bar stopped completely about halfway down his side).
