I switched from a 56 gallon with a Bubble magus 3.5 to a 90 gallon with a RO 1000 INT. I set it up 3 days ago. It is in 5.5 inches of water. At the moment it is going crazy with bubbles because I moved it! It also went crazy with foam when I changed the sock after the initial move-I assume sand got in it etc.

What is a "normal" break in time?

I hated the bubble magus because it was so finicky but it doesn't look like this is any better. That leads to the following questions:

1- Is the ideal water level lower than 5.5 inches, and how critical is it to keep it at exactly that?
2-Do I have to look forward to the skimmer going nuts every time I change the "sock?"
3-How long should it go without needing to be emptied?

Finally-Is there a protein skimmer made that self adjusts to changes in water conditions?

I have been enjoying the hobby for about 8 months, but the skimmer is the one thing that I am constantly trying to adjust.

    Thanks
