In the event of a power outage do you think that this generator would be practical or would just dumping water in and out suffice . I am leaning towards buying it yet worried about that exhaust . Could the exhaust go through a closed door if I just had the chord coming through the door and door jam

I live in an area that floods alot and we have to use generators alot real close to the business/home to run pumps to keep the water out! If the air ain't blowing right, and that exhaust starts coming in, it can get dangerous quick! We always run the exhaust as far from any openings we can! I'd invest in a cardon monoxide detecctor as well, get it as far away as possible from doors and windows, seal up any close to it as well as possible and just run an extension cord!

Its hard to say, not really knowing your building on where to run it! i'd walk around and find a spot if you can! A real long extension cord isn't that much considering the alternative!

Good idea. The generator would run a few feet from a door and window. If I ran an extension chord down to the ground off the fireescape I think that someone would steal the generator..especially if the power is out

yeah it's hard to say, but working through floods, i have seen guys almost pass out, and i've gotten some massive headaches from the exhaust real quick! Gotta be careful! Plus it might be worth a call to the fire department, Putting something blocking an emergency escape can be a really hefty fine!

Can you get to the roof? If so, ask the landlord and just drop a line down! BTW I'm thinking of a apartment complex with a flat roof!

It's more of like an old house. If the generator was on the fire escape it would only block us from getting by..if I couldn't move it I guess. But I see what you are saying. I wonder if its illegal to run it on a roof cause I can put it further away from the windows out on the roof .

    read reviews on generator

You might want to read the reviews on this generator. Apparently they aren't built very well, and break frequently.

If the fire marshal saw this, he'd tick you and the landlord most likely. Having said that, I've seen people store stuff on these escapes more than once... But I wouldn't.

I have this exact generator and I also use it for backing up my 55. I rarely use it - my UPS battery generally lasts long enough for the power to come back up. Anyway, it's never broken on me, but you do get what you pay for.

These are not the best and I wouldn't use it for anything super important (like human life support), but I think they're great and cost effective for our tanks.

I would never buy an electric / tool or generator from harbor freight.. there junk. Op, why dont you think about a battery backup system instead?

Could you reccomend something? Maybe provide a link. I don't know how battery backup systems work either. I'm just nervous because the power was out here a few months ago for numerous days .

Unless you drop a boatload of money, any battery backup is going to last a time measured in hours, not days.

So I have the battery backup, and my generator (the same linked) is the backup to the battery backup :p

Harbor freight is junk, but it's priced accordingly, so I like it for stuff I rarely use...
