I'm running an AC70 DIY mod HOB filter which will eventually get cheato, a little bit of frag and a little live sand (once the tank cycles).

Is this technically a refugium or is this a reverse photosynthesis device? Or, are/can these be the same thing?

From what I read, a refugium is meant for animals to hide moreso than growing a macro algae as a filter.

    Thanks!

It's a refugium. Pods will be able to grow in the chaeto.

I wouldn't use sand though. It's too small and area to have a DSB, which is the real reason for sand in a refugium.

I just modified an AquaClear 300 HOB power filter to make it a fuge and the sand caused me problems. The water flow blew the sand around causing it to jam up my impeller for the motor. I'm getting the chaeto this week.

If you want to see details of my DIY fuge and the probs I had, here's a link:

nice! thanks for the info and sorry for the issues you had. i think my aquaclear 70 is technically the same as your 300 so i'll follow what you went through.

The main issue was the sand. Not sure how big your filter is compared to mine but my set-up should be easy to follow. Make sure you make note of changes I made later in my thread once I discovered my issues.
