I understand and support why we no longer ship in real rock from certain places. But I still miss it and wish it weren't so. It was da bomb! Besides the lack of importation as a reason for all the recycled rock, it's also the market influx of people's tanks being torn down due to recent economics.

It is not any cheaper at all. Someone is making a tidy buck from recycled and it's the LFSs in this department. But for every tank of rock they buy dirt cheap, is another customer they won't have coming into their store. Profit upfront = loss in the long run.

It certainly sounds like an interesting time, no question. Seems similar to diving and observing a reef's nooks and crannies.

Regarding finances, I was speaking more so on coral propagation. Our local reef club are alway parting with rock, coral and sand for free/cheap to help out fellow beginners here locally.

The thing about live rock is something as simple as a seed living in a small hole to one day a year later bloom in to something nice. It could be months before something shows up.
