Ok so I am in the process of doing 2 tanks. Fish only and Reef. Originally I was going to do a 55 gallon reef. However, at the LFS there is a special for a 40 gallon with black oak stand and canopy for 389.00. The LFS clerk also is willing to hook me up with 10% off live stuff, and 40% off any other boxed supplies I need. To me everything is a good deal my only concern is for the fish I end up putting in the tank. Here are the ones I am interested in for the reef tank:
    1. Pair of Ocellaris Clownfish
    2. Royal Gramma
    3. Yellow head Jawfish
    4. Kaudern's Cardinal
    5. Firefish
    6. Blue Tang
    7. Yellow Tang
    8. Yellow Watchman Gobie

Any thoughts as to the combination being in a 40 gallon tank? I know some may think the two tangs would not be a good fit. However, I have had a lot of feedback saying the opposite as well (adapt to environment, won't get as big as usual in the wild) How do you all think of the price? Any help ASAP would be great they close at 8pm. PST

    Thanks alot guys!!!

    -Ben

Who told you that 2 tangs would be ok in a 40 gallon? Not even ONE tang will go well in there. And that rumor about how they won't grow as big in the wild just because they're in a smaller tank isn't true. Pure and simple. Sorry, just being honest. Don't do it.

Also 8 fish in a 40 is wayyyy too many. Cut out the tangs and you can swing the rest.

This may be a "duh" question but you do know you can't just get all those fish tonight and plop them into the tank right away, right? The tank needs to cycle for 4-6 weeks before even adding your first fish (unless you cycle with a damsel). Sorry if you already knew that...I'm just making sure...

I am gonna be one of the ones to tell you two tangs in a 40 is a bad idea. Fish adapting to the environment is a myth. At best you could keep them as juveniles then trade them back when they get big.

I honestly would skip. $389.00 for a 40 gallon tank and stand? I really don't see how that is even a reasonable price. What type of equipment does it come with?

yeah of course all the fish listed would be acclimated and introduced properly. The reason I listed them all was because that was my original plan for a 55-75(undecided) gallon tank I was going to get. The 40 gallon at the LFS just seemed too good to be true so it made me think and I need all the feedback I can get before I go make a mistake lol. Seems i will not get the tank. As nice as it is, it would be difficult to have a sump for it the way it is designed and I really want a Bowfront anyway, ok i'm talking myself out of it thanks hahah

i know you don't want to hear this. but a blue and a yellow tang will out grow a 40 gallon. yes its true they don't grow as big as in the wild but its a difference of 8 inches compared to 12(probably because of lack of exercise and proper diet). its untrue that it will grow to the size of a tank(unless you starve it then its just malnourished).

the tang will need to go back when its older or you will need to upgrade tanks.

2 combine two tangs in that tank will end in a 90% chance the hippo dies, which doesn't go well with other tangs in all but very large tanks.

if the tangs do survive and grow you will probably have alot of algae from there bioload. tangs are basically crap machines.

sorry i know you didn't want to hear this but if the others that claim this a good idea want to come out of the woodwork and argue, i gladly accept the debate.

edit:also for a 40 gallon setup that seems like average price.

They're trying to liquidate their stock. If you put all that stuff in a brand new tank, everything will die.

I do agree, do you think that a 80-90 gallon tank would be suitable?

    a 90 would be doable.
i think a 120 full of rock would be better do to the extra width. its important for 2 tangs if fighting not to have to see each other all the time.

If you mean for a tang, then yes, 1 tang.
