ok guys and gals been out of the game a couple years getting ready to dive back in. setting up a 60 cube 24x24 i believe... Will an eheim 1250 in the sump be an adequate return pump?

Probably; depends on the size of the sump.

As already asked, what size sump? And how many feet high will it be pumping?

I'd say no, I usually suggest a minimum of 10 times turnover ratio. I run a Eheim 1262 on my 50 cube 24x24x20 which is just under the 10 time turnover but I rely on my powerheads for flow also.

I think it is very borderline but would probably work ok with minimal head. anywhere between 5 and 10 turnover is just about perfect.

I have a 125 gallon tank and just bought the Reef Flo Dart pump. I've had a little giant 4mdqx-sc for the last 11 years still running strong. I haven't connected the new pump yet waiting on some more $ to come in. Just added a chiller and other things in the past 11 years that make that pump flow rate much less than I need now. Just think about future additions and base your pump on that. That way you will not have to upgrade your pump later. You can always valve the outlet side down for now and go full blast later when you add other things in the future.

I too have a 125g with a little Gina 4 mdqx-sc. The pump is great, running strong. I have a manifold where I can run 3 pieces of equipment but the only thing that I feel I can run without inhibiting the turnover rate is a carbon reactor. If I had a bigger pump I could run my chiller, biopellet reactor and anything else I need but pump size restricts that. Like stated, take into consideration other equipment you might want to run off the pump.
If its only going to circulate water than you should probably be ok. Anything else would require a separate pump.

There is no reason at all to have a minimum of 10x turnover. Minimum is what ever is needed for what you are supplying in the sump. The way it usually shakes out is the size of appropriate things for the setup and a fuge it is 5x turnover. Nothing wrong with 4 if that is all you need.

Tank flow from return pumps is a lousy way to get flow and should not be considered. fine if it is there, but that is not how you want to get it.
