guys i have a 30g breeder tank and i was told that i should put 36 lb or coral in the tank.

that seems to much coral to me, is this true.

and my ph is at 7.6 and the fist that i'm going to be putting in need 8.1- 8.4

should i go ahead a add the coral and then the coral will raise the ph level or the levels need to be up before i can add.

    Hi,

I believe they meant live rock not live corals. Anywhere from 1 lbs to 1.5 lbs to gallon of water seems to be the trend now.

Has this tank cycled at all ?

Coral nor live rock will increase the pH.

You need to get improved airflow to increase the pH at this point. CC and LR won't do it, at least until the pH gets lower than about 7.4; at that point, it'll keep it from going any lower.

How much rock is already in the tank? I'm asking because adding live rock in large amounts can cause your tank to cycle, endangering any livestock that are already in there.I believe that Blackraven is suggesting that you increase gas exchange to raise ph and he is right. This can be done by increasing surface aggitation with a powerhead. If your tank has a closed top it would also help to open it.

i do not have a closed up on my tank
and the only thing in the tank right now is the live sand.

do you think it would be OK to add 15lb of live rock or start with 5 lb or something smaller

and you guys said adding liverock will do nothing to the ph ?

What stage of the cycle are you at?

Are just adding the rock now ?

Personally I would shoot for more like 20-30 lbs if the tank is a 30 gal tank. The more rock the greater it's ability to filtrate.

This is the rock I used. this is just the way I done mine there are other ways to do it also. I used dry rock and a small amount of LR from my other tank to seed my 120. here is a link to the rock that i used. there are other options for rock also. I called them and told them what size pieces I was looking for and that is what I received. Great people to work with IMPO. I would do 25 lbs dry and 5-10 lbs live

First, welcome to 3reef,it's a good place for advise.I didn't know at first how far along you were with your tank start up.Adding live rock will cause your tank to cycle but this is good since yo have no livestock in it yet.At this point you can add your desired amount with no danger.I wouln't worry about the ph until after the tank has cycled and stabilized, but I would advise against adding any livestock, including corals.Take it slow,do some reading on tank setup.
