Getting ready to order return pump and powerheads and want to make sure i have go the right flow.

this is for a 90 gallon mixed reef tank with 20 gallon sump.

    1. Return pump. 9.5 mag or could I go with the 7?

    2. Koralia Evolution 1050. I was going to go with 2 of these to start, add 1 or 2 later if needed to give good random flow.

my question is; Would it be better to go with 2 1400's? or would that be to much flow?

    thanks a lot.

The tank will be in my living room and have heard that mags can be noisy? is there any truth to this? are there quieter ones in the same price range?

I have a mag 5 and you can hear it humming across the whole living room and into one of the bedrooms. That one is hard plumbed all the way though. I have another one on a frag tank with flex tubing and you can't hear it unless you put your head next to the sump.

My suggestion? Use flex tubing or if you have hard plumbing, setup at least the first foot coming off the pump with flex then adapt it to the hard tubing.

And by flex tubing I mean clear vinyl tubing.

The amount of flow you need depends on what type of corals you are planning to keep. (softies, LPS, SPS, NPS)

Don V thanks for the info. I was planning on using all flex tubing, does this stop or suppress vibrations?

does anyone have any suggestions on another pump that is in the same price range? and do i need 950 GPH? probably 3 to 4 feet to the head. or could i go with a 7?

I plan a mixed reef tank. I just want to know is 2 1050 ok? if i need to added another 1050 or 2 i can. or should i go with the 1400? i just don;t want to buy 2 1050s, then have to turn around and buy 2 1400s. because if needed i could add another 1050 if i needed more flows.

A 7 will not do. At 3-4 feet a 9.5 will be good. Mags are good pumps that are reasonable priced. Better pumps will cost you more. Ehiem 1262s run around $190.... Bubble Blaster pumps are not inexpensive.

    Hello,

I have a 90gal with a 40gal sump/refuge. I have 2 EVO 1400 and its perfect for flow. As for a return my pump won't work in your config, since it's pushing from my basement. A 9.5 MAG should be fine, but they are not known to be energy savers.

Btw, I purchased my EVOs at www.petmountain.com they had the best prices.

Look in to Maxi-Jet Utility pumps. I run these. They are dead quiet, reliable as hell, competitive in pricing, and the best warranty out there.

Go with the 9.5. It's better to have to much flow in that area than not enough. For power heads andy of the prodducts suggested above will work. Check out Big Al's.
