If your budget allows it go Eheim. I have mine resting on thicker airline tubing in my sump and the noise is practically non-existent. Two powerheads would be the minimum I would think.

It keeps the vibration from being amplified by the hard pipe. I plan on eventually changing my tank in the living room to include flex tubing between the pump and hard plumbing... one day...

Hey, I replied to you in my thread, But Ill tell you here too..I got 2 Hydor 1050, and my return pump is Eheim 1262..

I would go with the 2 1400's..You really don't want 3 or 4 power heads all over the place do you?

I do run 3 1050s, and I like the versatility I have to create a lower flow area on one side of the tank. All depends on what you want. Koralias are dead quiet though, you wont hear the 1400s or the 1050s.

I also run 3 powerheads in my 30G--2 425s on one side and a 750 with the return from the sump on the other. I can be more flexible and creative with 3 than if I just had two.

I have 100 g with 20gal sump. I have Koralia 4 and 1400 power heads (similiar ratings, the Koralia 4 is older). I have 2 returns, a Mag 9.5 and a Mag 7. You will need at least a Mag 9.5 if going with one return.

Yes, flexible PVC aka Flex SPA will suppress vibration, but most important eliminates the need for 90 & 45 degree fittings (within reason). Flexible PVC does require special PVC cement & NO primer! When I did mine, I ordered 30' of 1" flex PVC. I didn't need all of it, but wanted to have extra since locally they wanted $2.00 per foot which is insane! Don't forget to install a check valve after your return pump as well.
