I have a 56 gallon aquarium with two canister filters, a pretty typical freshwater setup. I'm interested in doing a FOWLR, but I'm concerned about lighting. I know lighting is less important, but I'm going super low light, I was going to put two 2 foot normal output fluorescent lights, one white one actinic, I could add one more if I need to bright lighting up for viewing. Is that enough light? I plan on getting a HOB skimmer as well.

    Any suggestions?

Lighting in a FOWLR is basically up to you and what you enjoy, as one as the fish can eat.
I'd drop the canister filters unless you're gonna religiously clean them every week. 'hob skimmer is a good idea. But a lot of rock will help ya out the most.

What are the plans for the tank as far as stock list. That will help a lot.

I know I want a pair of clowns (likely something nice - I had a pair of black before). I may go with a smaller angel. Still have to look around some. I plan on making it lightly stocked so I can do less maintenance.

I disagree with dropping the canister filters. Especially for a FOWLR. They work great for running carbon/ClearFX Pro and even some GFO. People only run into issues with them if they don't maintain them properly :)

Okay the tank is 30 x 18 and 24" tall. So basically take a 40 breeder, lop off 6 inches in length, but make it much taller...
I am going to get all the coral eaters I couldn't before because my last tank was a reef (something tells me I shouldn't have sold my remora!)

    Stocking for sure:
Pair of clowns (I want something that makes you look twice.
Flame or coral beauty (wife to decide).
Small tang such as "blue eye tang" ; lavender tang, or perhaps a yellow tang.

    Optional:
    Indigo dottyback
    dwarf puffer
    shoal of cardinals.
