So I ran a dedicated 30amp line to my stand and installed 2 GFI outlets.
They are at the top of the stand in a dry location, not above the sump.
attached to 1 of the outlets are 2 dj power bars (like this)

Well the GFI keeps going off at totally random intervels. I'm getting a little worried that it wil go off just as I head to bed. I'm not sure if the old DJ power strips are the cause or the GFI has just become too sensative

    Thoughts?

What would you do to correct it? Switch out the GFI for a regular outlet?

    Thanks
    J

Just a FYI those GFIs are only rated up to 20 amps, assuming you got 20amp ones.

How did you pigtail the feeds to the GFIs? A gfi will trip when there is a 4-6 ma difference between the hot and neutral. Meaning on a 20 amp circuit all it takes is .004 of one amp to cause it to trip. I've had a power strip cause a gfi to trip just turnning it off, with nothing plugged in to it.

The only reason I mentioned the GFIs are only rated up to 20 amps is if you have it tied into a 30 amp breaker if something goes wrong up to 30 amps "could" run through one of those causing them to possibly heat up and catch fire way before your 30 amp would trip. It's not a safe idea.. (Not saying I've never stretched the code before ) I wouldn't do that

Is the tank grounded? As in a grounding probe?

I have my powerheads on one gfi, and my return pump on another.

So if and when my return pumps gfi trips, the tank still has alot of flow in the tank.

As said, they are very sensitive.

Try to figure out what's tripping it, good luck.

*I'm actually using those GFI adapters instead to a regular outlet. They work and work the same.

Thanks. Did not know of the 20amp limit.
I'll have to double check the amperage and maybe switch out the socket

I know you can do this hobby without GFCI outlets.

The real question is why would you want to?

Correct me if I"m wrong, but I think they were originally designed to supply current in areas where there could also be water. I believe they are code in kitchens and bathrooms, etc.

For the small price/expense of this, I'm not going to say it's a no brainer- I'm not trying to offend, or put down anyone.

Your don't even have to have the outlets installed!
As long as your plugs are already three prong- (this century? J/K), you can get the adapter with the GFCI- like I am doing- and yes, they WORK!

GFCI - This is a must for hobbiest such as ourselves!

I'm not going to open the 'can of worms' about grounding probes on this thread- I also have a DIY grounding probe- it works too.

Make sure you pigtail off the feed and hit each gfi separately with its own hot and its own neutral, if you jump them together it could cause issues also.

To each its own. I play with sparks everyday. Ill not put my hand in any tank that's not gfi protected. Even then you could die or get shocked before it trips, I just don't want to be that sparky on an aluminum ladder with his foot in a bucket of water in the news :)
