When using a GFO product such as Rowaphos or Phosban, are there any negative aspects connected to this use that would effect our corals? If so, what are they and how can I continue to use these products without harming my corals? Thank you.

The only real bad possibility is shock from too sudden a change in water quality. You usually want to start slow with this stuff.

They can alter pH and according to Saxby you want phosphates at 5 not zero for optimal coral growth.

I've never heard that before, but phosphates at 5 means you're about to hit a huge algae breakout.

Thanks for the quick response guys. So, would you suggest using less than the manufacturers recommended dose?

I have read you want phosphates slightly above zero also.

No real down sides.... Just makes sure there is adequate flow so that is doesn't clump if you are using small size GFO particles.

    Here are my GFO Notes.

I use about the recommended dosage and my phosphates stay in the 0.03-0.08 range. Using the recommended amount I did not shock the system and also did not see any lowering of pH.

I'm currently using phosban, 150g for about ~120gal of water volume. Reactor is in my sump running on a slightly restricted rio 400.

phosphates = food for corals. It always about walking that line between having enough food for the corals and having an eye soar.
