How long does GFO take before it starts being effective? I have been running it in a reactor for two weeks and haven't seen any positive results yet. Just curious.

It should be showing signs now.

What was your phosphate at when you started the GFO?

Is the GFO tumbling in the reactor? It needs to tumble to be effective.

When you can't keep phosphates under .05ppm.

I have not tested phosphate yet, I just grow brown and green algae like crazy on my substrate.

    My GFO is tumbling.

It will take a while for it to help with the algae growth. You should manually remove as much as you can to quicken the process. The algae releases the taken up nitrate and phosphate when it dies. You also need to look into cutting back on feeding, lightening the bio-load possibly if you are overstocked. Cleaning your equipment more often and blowing off your rocks before each water change to remove detritus. If you are using frozen food you should thaw it in water and discard the water before feeding.

Thanks--when I do water changes most of the algae is sucked up and thrown out. But within 12 hours it's growing again on the bottom. I feed every other day. I think I need to upgrade my skimmer as it really isn't pulling much out. I'm waiting until BRS gets more Bubble Magus.
