should a GFO and Carbon reactor be set up before or after the protein skimmer in the sump?

GFO should be separate from the skimmer; as in, keep the pump to the skimmer separate from the pump to the GFO. The GFO pump can either go in the skimmer section, or into the return section, but the effluent should go near the return pump.

    K. so here is a picture of my sump....

My skimmer is very large for my tank and takes up most of the middle chamber of the sump. So what your saying is that i shouldnt have the skimmer and pump to the gfo reactor in the same chamber in the sump, correct? Im gonna try to place it in between the baffles in the last chamber with my return pump.

The point is you just want to give the GFO the cleanest water you can so it does not get guncked up. The out put of the GFO should be directed to the return pump suction just so you are not recirculating "treated" water back through the GFO. Does that make sense?
