I noticed one of my lights is not as bright as the other. It is the older one. Could this be a cause for my algae problem?

Most definitely. Bad bulbs are one of the causes to an algae outbreak. What kind of bulb is it and how old is it?

Well before I buy anything. Is one light supposed to be darker then the other?
My algae problem is I keep getting a brownish algae on the sand and it turns into GHA. Im running phosguard and I have cut my lighting time in half to try to starve it out. But its trying to make a come back.

Normally there is a blue light bulb and a white light bulb, so yes, there are different color lights. As far as what type of algae, could we get a pic to help with the ID.

It might not be the lights at all...excess nutrients in your water is the main cause of algae growth...check your water for nitrates, and phosphates...let us know the outcome to better help you

Are they different colors? Actinic and 10k, or both 10k....?

Did you test for phosphate and nitrate? Without these, algae can't grow, so you need to do something about the nutrients or it will just grow back, regardless as to the lighting.

Do you have a skimmer on the BC?

How often do you feed, and how much? What exactly do you feed (brand and type of food)?

Start answering; we need these kinds of details.

Im pretty sure they are both 10k. I do not have a skimmer. I will test the nitrate tomorrow and I have to get a phosphate test. I am running phosguard right now though. Currently I have no fish. Just some snails and a crab. So im no feeding.

Is the tank fairly new, if so then it's just a cycle. Check the bulbs, they will say what kind they are, i.e. 10K or actinic.
