I'm glad to see people using more dry rock now than buying all live rock this was a issue with me when I set up my previous tanks due to unwanted hitchhikers and other problems like bubble algea and so forth. I'm still from the old school where I like quite a bit of rock in a tank and I feel like this will also cut down on the very large cost that used to be associated with putting all live rock in a tank.

i have had some major nucence algae hichhikers with my first tank . wifes tank and my new tank have been set up with dry rock and seeded with my own rock and only complaint is some aipstasia in the wifes tank and thay have not grown just moved in a year but its a FOWLR tank

on a side note both tanks were cycled with coctail shrimp my original 90 i cycled with damsels and i fely so guilty i couldent get rid of them lol

there not the uglyest fish but danm thay get aggresive

on a side note aquaclear filters have a foam pad that acts like a pod farm when i cycle a new tank i take the sponge from my wifes tank and put it in the new tank once the cycle is almost complete talk about a pod explosion

I totally agree!! One can buy dry rock and pods to seed their tank or fuge if they need them for a lot less than LR with the benefit of not acquiring pests.

There is still a lot of other cool stuff that is hard to get without live rock. Stometellas for instance, but its not worth it IMO.

The discovery of new things popping up is what I like about having live rock. It's what drew me to saltwater. With dry rock you only have what you put into the tank yourself. I like the diversity so I look forward to seeing hitchhikers.

The other day I heard a click click click so I rushed over to the tank but it was only the damsel knocking shells around the tank. Ah well maybe next time. lol

Hitchhikers sound like great fun till it's one that kills your prized corals/fish. My lfs is carrying a man made rock that is seeded and cured in a 6 month process. They even have coralline already growing on it. Pretty cool stuff, saves the reefs, guarantees no unwanted hitchhikers, and has coralline, pods, and bacteria already seeded into it! (in bulk he sold me 300lbs for 4.5 a pound)

At least some places have started to put their own rock into the ocean and leaving it there for a while to seed before selling it. I think this is a decent compromise and shouldn't really affect the natural reefs.

Where do you guys normally order your dry rock from I've looked at BRS and also Reefcleaners but just want to see where most people get it from.
