My tank came with a glass cover. I'm trying to decide whether to install it or not. I'll be using T5 lighting, so the first concern that I have is the effect on the lighting. I know it will help with evaporation (also restricts cooling) - I have a chiller so I'm not concerned with that. It will keep jumpers from escaping the tank (However; I assume they may die from jumping into the glass). What are the benefits of the cover?

As far as I know, glass covers greatly cut down on the level of oxygen in the water because they inhibit oxygen exchange at the surface of the water.

the issue is going to be with gas exchange...you want it open, or I should say you don't want to cover it with glass. people who need to cover their tanks usually do it with some type of mesh material so that the water can still essentially "breathe".

+1 to this! No glass covers. You want the maximum amount of exposed surface possible.

if you have a skimmer and you partly cover the tank you will be fine.

I'd leave it open as well.
