So, I have a question for some of you DIY buffs out there.

So, I know glass is interesting to work with and I have been practicing cutting and what-not.

If I was to build a tank, would it be safe to build a frame for the bottom of it as you see on commercially made tanks? I was thinking of using 1" x 2" board and putting 1" under the tank all the way around and adding an additional 1" square trim around the base forming an "L" for the tank to sit in to keep it off the stand directly. Would this base be okay? Or should I try to keep it flat on a stand? I was afraid of flat on the stand because if anything was between the glass and stand, or it was warped for some weird reason, as the weight of it being filled could cause the glass to break. I'm talking normal 1/4" annealed glass, not tempered.

Let's say the base of the tank was 2'x2' would this be a good idea to do?

    Thanks in advance!

Sure I would add the trim. If you have a solid top for your stand I would add enough cardboard under the center of the tank to make contact with the bottom of the glass and the stand. If nothing else the cardboard will add a modicum of support for the glass flexing.
