    if I put a Koreala Nano in the sump and pointed it at the surface to cuase agitation, would this improve the gas exchange?

    Yes. Also make sure the tank is level so water isn't touching the glass anywhere.

    Bottom line: With that opening and a skimmer or good airstone you will have good oxygen exchange --but do not underestimate the importance of strong flow to help oxygen exchange also.
