Setting up a new reef tank. After last one felt the need to crash. I had a custom fit screen canopy on the old tank but not sure it was the right idea. looking for a little insight. Glass or Mesh?:confused:

screen all the way.. glass is just an added maintenance of cleaning and is breakable which with the constant taking on and off is bound to happen..

Just my opinion of course but just swapped out my glass for screen on my 30.

I'd go screen all the way. Maybe like a 1/2" mesh. Keeps the fish in, lets the light in, but allows proper gas exchange.

Yes, except 1/4" mesh. 1/2" won't keep any smaller fish in :)

Screen or mesh is the best.

Glass absorbs light and reduces gas exchange.

I also use a screen. better gas exchange, keeps fish in, doesn't block/reflect light, temps are less likely to spike. if your fish jump they can hurt themselves on glass (or so I've heard). You can pick up a custom kit on BRS for pretty cheap too.

Most of these generalizations are true, however, I decided to stay with glass tops on the 300. PAR readings are no different with or without, as long as the glass is clean. Haven't had an algae problem on the glass so far. Also heat loss and evaporation are a big deal on large tank. With a big skimmer and a sump in the basement, gas exchange isn't an issue. It all depends on your situation.
