I don't know much about the fixture yet - it's still at the fish store - Nova Sundial T5 (I think)? Until my tank stand comes in, I'm kind of in a holding pattern on everything else.

No top for me either. If you are worried about fish jumping, some folks use egg crateing - like what you see over ceiling lights...on the top. Lets the light in, heat out, etc. but also keeps fish from hoping out. I have not had that problem though...my tank is wide open on the top.

    This is going to funny.

I have a top but hear me out guys lol. I had the glass cut and angled up in the back to duct my cold air flowing over the top from my fans and pressurize it into the small space in between the glass and the water surface, in exchange, ive seen a very accurate way to control my water temperature via my fans turning on and off.

But if a very hott room is not a problem like mine, id say no top.

    Ditto on the topless.
Also, if you don't mind me asking what draws you to that particular light fixture?

I use eggcrate and knock out little sections in it to allow more light to enter the tank.

Wow! I don't mean to intrude on this, but you guys are answering a question I never thought of asking. When I bought my tank it had a top and I never considered not using it. It really makes a difference?

yeah it can, in a negative way. The glass can lessen the intensity of the light entering the tank when salt creep and calcium deposits crust on the top. It also lessens the gas exchange into the tank. If you have escape artists, or "jumpy" fish, eggcrate is a good alternative to the glass tops.
