you will have to become certified before any company will take you. Look at some of your local dive stores for lessons. When my brother and sister in law became certified they had classes for weeks where they were in a pool. They then went to some mine to get their final dive in before getting certed

    DOH!

I live in a rural area; so no such thing as a local dive shop for me ; I think that the nearest shop would be about a three hour drive (in good weather).

Does the resort that you're staying at offer any kind of lessons/outings?

No, I am staying in a friends condo -- not at a resort.

I'm sure that there are many local shops/tours that are availbable, was just hoping that there was an off chance that someone may have been there and knew of a good one.

Does your friend know of any or is he/she not a diver? Either way, as has been mentioned, most places will require that you have a certification unless you're lucky enough to find a place that offers a "quickie" SCUBA certification class like some resorts offer. You should still be able to go snorkelling though. Wish I had a suggestion for you as to where to go but I've never been.

Its always better to get your introductory training at home but most places will do a "Resort Course" to get you in the water on your vacation. Check your local YMCA and or local college for courses.

In Maui the biggest operator on the island is The Scuba Shack which has a 3 day class
    Instruction

Apparently PADI has started an online E-Learning course you can complete ahead of time and then you just need the 4 checkout dives once you get to Maui instead of the whole 3 day course

we went snorkling with the "pride of maui" boat.. we actually did Snuba, the cross between snorkling and scuba, it was easy as pie and didnt need a certification. The boat took us to the molokini caldera where there is a huge reef with tons of beautiful fish..

I did snuba in Australia and I hated it. Pulling that air hose behind me was a royal PITA :(

Sorry to hear that.. Our hoses were about 20 feet long and strapped to our back. In 15 feet of water I felt like I had all the room in the world to explore. I guess I never have been SCUBA diving in the ocean though.. I did it in a pool at my school for a while, but then a guy in the same program died in a exercise so they shut the program down and it kinda scared me away from it for a while.
