so im gonna do shotput and discus for our highschool starting monday. has anyone one here done it. i did it last year but all the weight have gone up since its highschool. im better at discus than shotput my best were

    shotput- 38 feet
    discus- 76 feet

i have friends doing it with me so that helps but im gonna be in a weight room with the biggest kids in school. and i dont lift any so im afraid that i might not be able to lift much. but im sure my 18 inch biceps will help that lol :p
just needed to vent on this matter. thank you and wish me luck

I did both of those my senior year, I was average in shot put, but decent in discus. Discus doesn't require that much strength, it's all about the technique. Shot put has more strength involved, I believe it's a 12lb shot? But technique is still very important. Honestly, if you haven't lifted before, you will be weak, but you have to start somewhere. Goodluck with it.

Psssssh I pole vaulted and ran the 400 and 4x400 relay  And ran the 4x100 a few times to break the school record :)

Your best bet is core stuff (abs and obliques etc) and shoulder stuff. Bench press and shoulder presses are good stuff for that. as well as leg press and squats. Psssh just get buff

i did both as well. shot, while quick feet are a plus, is mostly brute force. i was too tall and lanky to be real great at shot. a quick compact frame is usually best. on the other hand, you don't need a whole lot of strength to excel in discus. it's all a slingshot effect. the biggest way to generate whip is footwork. i don't know how many times i spun around like a fruit before i ever even threw a discus. always let your empty arm pull your chest around and keep your head up. don't try to watch your throw

I didn't do anything. It may not "help" Gexxy, I sure wish I would have though. At least you've got interests.....& friends. All of my friends from the "olden" days are in jail or dead.

i loved track in high school i didnt do your events (400 & 800)but the best part and also the cheesiest part is that your lucky to have friends doing it along with you. i dont know if i could have ran all them miles without friends to goof off with on the trail. the lifting weight thing: go in with some friends and just start out with your own weight no one cares what you lift more then you do... we just think people care but in reality no one does. so dont sweat it, get into a rhythm and youll be set. my first time lifting i wasnt so great at it and didnt have good form and didnt push as much lb as my friend but i stuck to it and went to the gym with my friends and leaned and soon after was at the same lb they were.
ALSO: very crucial!! girls track! the best part of boys track was watching the girls team.
