First off, the only dumb things to do are to ignore what the majority of successful long term keepers recommend for starting.
Once you have been successful for a year or so, then you can use your experiences along with your wants, and sometimes decide to push the envelope in other directions, keeping in mind the possible outcomes.
A lot of questions people ask, I'm unable to help with because of no experience with.
My tanks be they dwarf or standard seahorses, or my reef tanks, have all been simple set ups with nothing in the way of equipment other than power heads, pumps, home made skimmers etc.
Even my lighting has been four foot standard fluorescent lighting utilizing GE Daylight lamps coupled with Philips Actinic 03 lamps one to one. It has been fine now for 19yrs so why change? (I don't keep sps, only LPS and they grow large enough I'm having trouble selling them as most people don't have room)
I don't even use clean up crews other than serpent stars in my reef tanks. No crabs or snails.
Getting back on track here, my dwarf tanks are REALLY simple with just ambient lighting, two open ended air lines for water movement, some rock for biological filter, and some plastic decor. There is a Marina i25 internal filter on timer that runs for about 3 hours to remove uneaten food, but that's as sophisticated as it gets. I have it fastened slightly above the top of the tank to slow the flow through the filter to avoid sucking up dwarf fry but still enough flow to remove the bbs.
I don't have macros because first it's hard to come by any here in Canada, and second, they require stronger lighting which means warmer water which in turn may require a chiller/cooler.
I have aquaclears from my fresh water days and I HAVE used them from time to time, but only as water movers basically with no cartridges in them.
If anything, I HAVE been known to put rock rubble in them to aid in pod life forms but that's all.
So basically,IMO, any filter you use though, should be OK as long as you don't slack off on the weekly cleaning so the detritus decay can't exacerbate the nasty growth of vibriosis and others like it. The intakes must have something to prevent the seahorses from being sucked up into or against the intake, but other than that I can't think of any other things to worry about.
