In the video that is in the first thread talks about a lot of greek stuff to me. Is that a good concept to have in your sump with the chambers as they are? What really caught my attention was how he said the tank was always clean. He really seemed like he knew what he was talking about but I am still pretty stupid to all of this and probably can be easliy missled.:-/

It looks quite an interesting concept, I myself am looking into sump design at the moment for my new tank next year. I like the idea of the bethnic zone but I will stay clear of the aiptasia scrubbing as I do not have a UV filter. All in all it looks a good design but the only change I would make is to have a few baffles between the drain line zone and the refugium/bethnic zones to prevent too many micro bubbles returning to the main tank.

One other thing that may be worth looking at is a phosban reactor, you can use various different media such as phosban or activated carbon. The devices are nice and cheap ($30-35) and far more effective than just putting a bag of media in your sump. I've read on the forum that some of the guys actually use two of them, one running phosban and the other carbon. On the design you are looking at I suppose it could run in the skimmer chamber or within the return section. Someone else on here may be able to advise the best location if you do decide to get one, or two!

    Good luck

+2 on Jason. I go back and forth with adding a sheet of filter floss just out of habit. Plus, after 1 week it really picks up a lot of munge that I figure is better out than in.

Otty - what a cool video link- Shaun Wilson seemed to think this was an excellent filtration system - Jason do you think you could incorporate enough plantlife to make this an dual purpose sump/refugium?

I thought it was a good concept but I am new at this and can be easily convinced on something because of my lack of knowledge on the situation. Thanks for the reply.

Refugiums are all the rage right now. I believe they do offer huge denitrifying properties. So macro Algaes offer better nitrate export than others.
I have a friend that has a small fuge in his sump. 7-12G of his sump he has a very deep sand bed with merical mud then he has a huge ball of Cheato and a couple other leafy algae and then 2 mangroves.
