my two tangs, dejardini and powder blue, have started attacking my gsp. the pb in particular has become very aggressive in eating on it. the gsp polyps have stayed hidden for the last two days. my initial thought is to just take the rock that the gsp is attached to and trade it in. unfortunately my rbta has chosen this rock to attach itself to. does anyone know of a way to curb this behavior or is it one of those things that once the fish starts this, they don't stop? My real fear is that they will start eating on other corals as well. Is it time to trade these two fish in and see if the next wave are truely "reef safe"?

You are lucky to have a fish that keeps that stuff in check! Ha Ha :D On a more serious note you could try to relocate your nem by directing strong flow at it leading to a move and then trade in the gsp rock.

    Just a thought.

yes, i realize that it is a weed and if it just limited its growth, i would be okay with it. however, i am tired of looking at a purple mat. :) i am a little hesitant to bother the nem. i like where he is and don't really want to send him on the move.

How often do you feed and what do you feed?

Tangs are not reefsafe reguardless of what people say. They are "safer" then other fish, but they LOVE to eat LPS corals, and its usally the more expensive LPS they start with. You're lucky they're just starting on your GSP. I have a friend with a 220g that was full of high end LPS and things started receding and he didnt know what was wrong cause everything was perfect. Then one day his daughter says "daddy what is that fish doing" and his Naso Tang was munching on some Aussie acans... He noticed his other tangs were munching on other corals. So they all went back to the LFS.

i feed twice a day. an automatic feeder feeds Dainichi veggie pellets at around 2:00. Then i feed either mysis, brine or some frozen angel food mix in the evenings along with dried nori.

yes, i'm afraid that i will have to do the same. it's a shame because they are beautiful fish. i used to throw a handful of chaeto in from my fuge every once in a while. this might have kept them distracted. i stopped because i have aptasia in the fuge and i was afraid of introducing it to the DT. i might go back to adding chaeto. i will just have to do a good job of inspecting it for any unwanted critters.

My Tank is Full of LPS and softies, and TANGS. Ive had one instance where my Purple Tang nipped on my Wellso brain coral. But the coral was in bad shape prior and was on the downfall. They havent touched a single chalice, or brain or any of those for the matter. I think it comes down to feeding, I would try putting in a Nori Clip and Some Nori/Seaweed for grazing for the fish. If your tank isnt capable of handling the fish, they regardless to the species of the fish will go after corals and inverts. Cause in the ocean really its survival of the fittest.

yes, i put nori on several clips in the evening. they make pretty quick work of it. i might try putting nori on the clips before i leave in the morning. the problem is that this gives the nas snails plenty of time to get to it before the lights come on.

I have NEVER witnesed the three tanks i had in my old tank go after LPS. I had a football sezed frogspawn and a grapefruit sized hammer. None were ever touched by my purple, powder brown and tomini. I also had GSP and they never messed them either. do you have any algae growth on them? how big is the tank? do you ahve any algae growth in the tank at all? tangs are grazers constantly eating like a cow. keep them busy with that for a bit to see if they leave them alone...
