Look into modding an aquaclear Filter, they are fairly cheap and look easy to mod. I have one I bought as a filter and I am planning on modding it for my 30G.

AquaClear all the way. Get the biggest one you can put on your tank. That way to can mod it into a fuge when the time comes lol. Also, you don't have to the filter media that comes with it. I run purigen for one in mine.

Use an Aquaclear 110 or 70, theres tons of DIY mods, and its super Easy, just add some sand Live rock, Chaeto, and a light, Done!

    Kraylen's Aquaclear 110 Fuge Mod - Nano-Reef.com Forums
DIY Aquaclear Refugium Mod - YouTube

If you use the 110 on a 20, you may have to cut of every other fan blade on the impeller to slow the flow, if you go with the 70 you can easily swap out the impeller for a aquaclear 30 impeller, but they arent compatible on the 110. super easy mod

If you do the 110 and cut the impeller blades, take your time on this to balance the impeller as best you can! :)

wow, I thought I was the only one that promoted the AquaClear HOB filters lol. They are just super easy to work with and there tons of mods that can be done. Also, they are easy to clean and fix when they don't work lol. I've used them for years with really no problems that all. I was able to fix whatever it was with ease.

I need to but one of the strips that have the timers built in on at least 2 of the outlets.

Those cost to much. Just buy a timer for like Christmas tree lights and plug that into one of the outlets on your powerstip. Then just run an extension cord from that.
