I'm looking to upgrade my mechanical filter with a canister one, any one have any opinions of what a good canister filter would be? I have 55 gallon tank. I also don't want to spend a whole lot right now. Any suggestions would be greatly apprecitated.

Why do you want to do that? If you decide to get a canister don't take the mechanical out, I would keep it also, i have always got good result with them
about a canister they are several, but some times a good reliable one is going to cost you some $$$. on the other hand with a canister you be having skimmer and other equipment in your display tank.
I never ask, is your mechanical a wet/dry, or just a hang on back? if it is a hang on back it don't really matter

Are you sure that canister filtration is what you ultimately want for your system? I have used fluval in the past and have been happy with them.

if you really decide on a canister i would recommend a fluval 405, they're truly silent, they're real easy to clean and theres a lot of storage space.
