I'm going to be ordering live rock soon for my 55gal tank. I found some at liveaquaria and it's pretty cheap. Saltwater Live Rock for Marine Aquariums: Fiji Standard Live Rock

So is this good live rock to start out with? Is this site legit? I'm probably going to order two 45lb boxes so I'll have 90lbs of lr in my new 55gal.

Live rock is live rock... Only difference is density and rock shape.
Make sure you clean it and cure it well as there will be ALOT of die back!!!

I personally am a fan of Pohnpei and Bali rock

I plan to cure my rock in my tank while it is cycling. That's OK right?

Yes that one of the best ways to cure live rock,it will cycle your tank fairly quickly.

I would just buy base rock or get live rock locally. Once you add in the cost of shipping, the liveaquaria rock is over $6 a pound.

Make sure when the cycle is complete you do some heavy WCs... I have cycled tanks with fresh uncured, shipped rock and you will have SERIOUS NO3 issues with you do not do HUGE water changes....

You do have the ability more than "cured" rock to get hitchhikers, good or bad...

I agree with Packleader, buy local!!

Out of about 70lbs of rock how much of it should be live?

thats up to you, and how patient you are, if your very patient less then a lb. if you not patient more then that.

as all the live rock does is tell you the starting size of the bacteria culture. even if you buy a huge amount it will only grow to meet the size of available ammonia nitrite and nitrate.
if your already planing to wait a while before stocking you just buy a little and then put some food in there to break down into ammonia.

theoretically you can start a culture with some rock scrapings.

I think I'll probably do 30lbs LR and 40 base. It shouldn't take too long for the base to become live should it?

i wouldnt think so, as many bacteria can double there population in a day.

also note some live rock may be counter productive if it has to great a amount of die off it will cause a drawn out cycle, because it will be producing more ammonia then a regularily stocked tank would.

remember food is the key, food meaning ammonia
